7th. June 2010.

IT'S been two months since I last updated this blog. As I said last time, the weeks just fly by..

The Cafe has begun to get busier with holidaymakers swelling the number of customers and as the weather warms up the yard is more attractive to sit in. The gardener, Vic, who normally does my hanging baskets, has been ill this year so was unable to do them. Therefore I decided to re-commission our old greenhouse at home and plant them up myself. You will see the result now hanging in the yard, together with the window boxes and tubs. We have gone for an England, red and white theme this year and the ‘busy lizzies’ once they get established should give us a good show.

Certainly I hope so because  we have, once again, entered the ‘Norwich in Bloom’ competition. Certainly the yard looks summery now and our resident pair of Blackbirds have been busy again and have just reared their second brood of the season. The young stay in the yard for quite a while before flying off, so add another point of interest to our customers. I like to think it our very own, ’nature watch’ and in the centre of the city.

Jennette has now completed her sky dive which she did last weekend. You can see from the picture that she really enjoyed the experience. I take my hat off to her, I don’t think I could do that, AND she raised over £800 for the Charity. The picture is also displayed in the Cafe though there are many more and a video!!

While I am on the subject of charities. Our Burundi bears, which we have for sale most of the time have been selling well lately as the ladies who knit them were asked to do some in ‘Norwich City’ and England colours. So they may become an essential ‘must have’ mascot and every one sold helps build schools in Africa.

As for our Staff news - Both Fiona and Flossie are now taking driving lessons, so watch out!! Also we have a new young worker, Alicha, who will be working regular Saturdays and School holidays. She has made a very good start and is just recently come out of the sink to start serving customers at the till.  She is a keen St. John's Ambulance volunteer and was recently awarded Norfolk Cadet of the year, so you will be in good hands if you need first aid when Alicha is on duty.. Finally Amy has returned from maternity leave and we are very pleased to see her back, even if it is only two days a week. She is finding leaving Lily particularly hard, but is enjoying catching up with all the customers again.

I will admit to being a bit nervous about the forthcoming budget statement and hope that VAT does not rise, as the last thing I wish to do is raise prices across the board to reflect any increase in this tax. So watch this space, if prices do go up I can assure you it will not be to increase any profit to the cafe. We are very much aware of the competition in the city and try to keep our prices reasonable, so that customers at least are happy that they are getting value for money.

At the moment we have not taken our home made soup off the  menu and it continues to sell, though not as fast as the cooler months. But it is appreciated by some of our customers who by now would have to be trying something else and not be too pleased. However we have put our ‘Greek Salad’ back on the menu for the summer and that has been selling quite well.

So that’s it for now. Enjoy the long summer days and lets hope we get plenty of sun.

All the best,

Steven and Pam

Tuesday 28th June.

Well here we are in Maryland, USA visiting with our daughter Jennie. Hope you enjoy the photographs below. Just click on them to see larger images.

It's been a very good trip which is coming too quickly to a  close. We have been to Virginia and visited Busch gardens  for lots of fun on water rides and also went to Williamsburg which has been preserved as an old colonial town on the 19th century. The temperatures are hard to cope with, it being unusually hot for this time of year going up to 38 C and extremely humid. Thank goodness for air conditioning.

While we have been away the Cafe has been well looked after by our ladies and I have been told that the flowers in the yard are now well established and creating a colourful, pleasant environment for you, our customers, who enjoy sitting in the fresh air.

We have finally stopped selling soup for the summer. It was time, as the temperatures increase and it will make its re-introduction in the autumn, all the more welcome. I am sorry for those of you that enjoy a bowl of soup at lunchtime, but please try a Greek salad instead, they are very good, and while you are at it, try an authentic Greek style, cold coffee.

I mentioned that the staff are very ably looking after the place while we are away, but.... Fiona has gone and got herself a little friend who is spending a lot of time in the Cafe of late. She has been taking some pictures, which we hope you enjoy.

Don't forget, For a limited time, if you visit the Cafe, between 10 and 11am and 3 and 4 pm weekdays then buying one cup of filter coffee or a cup of tea will get you another FREE! So get along during these times and save a little.

Have a good summer,

See you in the Cafe,

Thursday 15th July

I hope everyone is enjoying the warm weather and our yard is certainly getting full now with customers enjoying the 'al fresco', experience. Our flowers are at their best now with the geraniums doing exceptionally well. It is with sadness that I have to report that our resident blackbirds seem to have had a tragedy. The third brood they were rearing this year, perished in the exceptionally hot weather and now the male has disappeared. So though the female is still around, without a mate, there has been no more eggs. We will have to wait and see what happens next. You will also, if you have visited the Cafe lately, have seen a succession of new faces. That's because we have an almost continuous 'work experience' programme. So the youngsters you see are from local schools doing a week or two with us, to experience the world of work, often for the first time in their lives. Please be gentle with them!!

Enjoy the summer.
Steven'
