22nd January 2012

Wow, can't believe that we are looking at the end of January already. That Christmas is now just a memory and Easter eggs are appearing in the shops with 86 days to go!!!

The Cafe trade has really slowed down and the city itself seems very quiet despite the continuing 'Sales'. So, we are taking this quiet time to think about what we do and how we can do it better. It also gives us a bit more
time to talk to our customers and give that little bit of extra care and attention.

We are grateful for the continuing support of our regular customers and also for the positive, encouraging comments of new customers who have just found us and say they will come back. We even had one customer who used to work at the Cafe for Hadi in the 70's, who was amazed that there was still a thriving Cafe on the site.

We are also getting better known for our 'gluten free' menu too and attracting more coeliacs who know that when they come to Cafe Morello they will have plenty of choice, not only of savoury but sweet items too. In fact
I have now decided never to use ordinary flour in any of my homemade soup recipes, which means that all the soups are now safe for everyone. We have finally received our certificate for our success in the 'Norwich in
Bloom' competition, last summer and this Certificate has been framed and proudly displayed in the Cafe.

Pam and I went to Horsey Gap last week to see the Seals on the beach with their pups. It was a glorious afternoon, blue skies and calm seas so I took a couple of pictures which I hope you will like. Just click on them to enlarge them. So that's it for now. I hope that the beginning of 2012 has been good to you,

All the best

Look forward to seeing you in the Cafe..

19th April 2012.

My last blog was during the winter and I was saying Easter was just round the corner!! Since then Pam and I have been to America to see our daughter and family there and Easter has come and gone. It never ceases to amaze me how time marches on and we are in the most part unaware of its passage except when you are doing something like this blog which reminds you.

This week I have noticed that our resident Blackbirds are back and cleaning up their nest. They have abandoned the site at the top of the yard in the ivy by Looses ever since a well meaning member of the public, last summer, on seeing young fledgling birds leaving the nest one day, tried unsuccessfully to return them but in the process caused panic and distress not only to the young but to the parents as well. So now they have an alternative site. I shan’t tell you where that is, you’ll just have to come visit and observe!

Wow the weather has certainly turned, it’s gone so cold and have you noticed that since the announcement of a hose pipe ban that it hasn’t stopped raining!! My thoughts had been turning to bedding plants when I saw them in our local nursery and was tempted because we had had such a warm spring. Thank goodness I listened to Pam and didn’t buy them, the recent frosts would have killed them for sure. Isn’t that why these nurseries put them on sale so early, to catch the optimistic who then have to buy again to replace those lost?

The Cafe has not changed, the gluten free options continue to attract new customers, the decorating and ‘shabby chic’ look to the premises still brings favourable comments and we are very pleased when our customers comment on our level of customer service and friendly atmosphere which is so lacking in many of the larger, more, high profile establishments.

As you know, we pride ourselves on baking all our own cakes. The one exception to this has always been the scones which we traditionally bought from our baker. However we have now changed this and for some months now have made our own cheese and fruit scones. They are selling well, particularly when customers come in just as the scones have been removed from the oven!! It also means that we can now offer scones with alternative fruit and not just sultanas which is popular. So we hope you will try them..

Our Staff have not changed, Imogen has returned from a  three week university trip to Venice so she will be pleased to recount her experiences of that. Pam and I were quite jealous because it is one of our most favourite places.  Sam is doing extraordinarily well with his acting career and has had some very good auditions for high profile parts and at the same time, he is studying hard for his A-levels so he is under quite a bit of pressure. Despite that he enjoys his time at the Cafe and will be with us for some time yet.  Danielle had her 16th Birthday!!! this week so she is growing up fast.

On the left Jennette takes to the coals and above a view of just how hot those coals were.

Jennette has completed her Charity fire walk (evidence above) and emerged, unscathed with in excess of £1000.00 for Charlie Ryan. The final amount has yet to be announced, but of course she is thrilled to have raised so much, and sends heartfelt thanks to all our lovely family of customers for supporting her so generously.

So that just about wraps it up for now and brings you up to date. Look forward to seeing you in the Cafe. Take Care, keep safe.

God Bless

Dear customers

I would like to share this amusing, but slightly sad incident from our lovely cafe. As part of the redecoration which we carried out in November 2011, Pam bought a lovely container to hold soap, for the toilet. See Photo 'one'. Last week someone took the plunger from this container so it is now unusable!! In addition, Pam placed a silk flower on each table in the restaurant, to brighten the room. Last week one of these was taken too, see photo 'two'.

This type of behaviour very rarely happens in our Cafe because you, our customers, are lovely and appreciate that we have achieved a unique and special environment in the centre of the City, which is for your enjoyment.

However occasionally someone will come in who is not the type of customer we want and these incidents occur. I think people who do this type of thing deserve our sympathy as they are obviously in need of love. So, to them I say, 'God bless you and may you come to realise that behaviour like this will not lead to happiness but that you are welcome to those items if you really need them'.

As my Lancashire Father used to say, 'There's nowt so queer as folk'.
