March 2nd Hi everyone, I know I often start like
this, but, ‘Where did all the time go???!! In my last blog we were preparing
for Christmas and now we are looking towards Easter. Well I can report that we had
a very busy Christmas and new year period and the shop sales brought many
people into the city and I can report that lots of the shoppers found us, some
for the first time. I hope you were one of them
and that you liked what we do and our style and have visited often since then. The Cafe hasn’t changed
much, we did have to put up our prices to reflect the rise in VAT but I have
tried to keep them reasonable and on the whole lower than similar
establishments. This is in keeping with our ethos of giving good value for
money and not trying to extract the last penny of profit. You see I like this
business, our staff enjoy working there and we want our customers to be
satisfied and to come back regularly. It's a system that has held us in good
stead for many years. We have recently added an
addition to our ‘Gluten free’ range with a really yummy, moist, lemon
drizzle cake. The recipe was given to us by Mr. And Mrs Peter Millichamp and
it has been a winner. We are selling lots of it and I even have to limit the
staff who keep eating it too!!! So thank you Peter. As any regulars will know, I
do try and keep our alley bright with flowers, even in winter, and to this end
planted up a window box and tubs with winter pansies. They were doing pretty
well until last Saturday I arrived at work to find that the window box plants
were all dead. I was disappointed and can only assume that some night time
visitor must have put something in the container to kill the plants. This does
happen from time to time with late night revellers from the pubs and clubs and
is just something we have to put up with being in the City centre. Fortunately
another tub and container were further up the yard behind a locked gate and
they have survived so I am looking forward to getting some colour from them. I
also planted some daffodil bulbs in the small garden area and they are almost
in flower, so that's encouraging. It will also not be long before we start
thinking of planting up the hanging baskets. They are my favourites as the
show they make in the yard is always so colourful. I have also to report that
our resident blackbird is once again building a nest in the Ivy up near
Looses. They have done this for the last 3 years and previously have managed
to rear three broods over the summer. Going back to Easter, just
some advance notice that we will be closed on each of the Bank Holidays, Good
Friday and Easter Monday but will be open on the Saturday in between. Also we
will be closed on the extra Bank Holiday for the Royal wedding 29th
April. This is in keeping with our general policy of not opening Sundays and
any Bank holidays, we like our time off too!! We are still continuing with
our Saturday game of asking for famous names instead of table numbers,
when customers order their food. It's something we have done for years now and
is unique to Norwich. It makes the act of taking out the food a little
unusual, to say the least and is the cause of much amusement. So when you
visit us on a Saturday for lunch, come prepared with a good name. We always
have visits from the likes of Elvis, Madonna, Churchill, and Nelson but we
particularly like the more unusual ones. Don’t worry if the young staff
don’t know who Jane Russell or Kirk Douglas are, there are plenty of us who
do!!! So as we get nearer to
spring, we look forward to our outside tables being used regularly again,
taking the pressure off the few tables inside. Don’t forget, during the
winter we are a ‘friendly’ Cafe where we expect customers to share tables
during busy times and this is a policy that is appreciated by the majority. If
you want to sit alone, then we have only three tables for you and it might
involve a wait, so , you have been warned. As for the staff, we have one
addition and that is Danielle who has just joined our team. I am trying to
give her a few duties to assist in her training and look forward to using her
more regularly as the summer gets nearer. So that's pretty much got us
up to date. I hope you enjoyed reading about events at the Cafe and will come
and see us soon God
Bless Steven
